Exploring the Unity Game Engine: A Beginner's Guide

Unity powers a huge share of the games on phones, consoles and PCs. It is also one of the friendliest engines to learn. This guide walks through the core ideas you need before you open your first project.

Why pick Unity?

  • One engine, many platforms. Build for iOS, Android, web, desktop and consoles from the same project.
  • A big ecosystem. The Asset Store, packages and a massive community mean most problems already have an answer.
  • C# scripting. A modern, typed language that scales from prototypes to shipped games.

The editor at a glance

When you open Unity, you'll see five main panels:

  1. Scene view, where you build and arrange your world.
  2. Game view, which shows what the player's camera sees.
  3. Hierarchy, a list of every object in the current scene.
  4. Inspector, which shows the properties of the selected object.
  5. Project window, which holds all of your assets: models, textures, audio and scripts.

GameObjects and components

Everything in a Unity scene is a GameObject. On its own, a GameObject does nothing. Behaviour comes from the components you attach to it:

Component What it does
Transform Position, rotation and scale
Mesh Renderer Draws a 3D model
Rigidbody Adds physics
Collider Defines the shape used for collisions

This composition model is the most important idea in Unity. Instead of deep class hierarchies, you snap small pieces of behaviour together.

Your first script

Create a new C# script called Spinner and attach it to a cube:

Press Play and the cube spins. Because degreesPerSecond is serialized, you can tweak it live in the Inspector.

Why multiply by Time.deltaTime?

Update runs once per frame, and frame rates vary between devices. Multiplying by Time.deltaTime turns "per frame" into "per second", so your game feels the same everywhere.
